Ret. Sgt. Major Richard R. ''Red'' Ebert, 80, of Hanover Township, died Saturday April 13th 2002at Hospice Community Care Unit, Mercy Hospital.

Born Feb. 17, 1922, in Wilkes-Barre, he was a son of the late Raymond and Anna Ebert. He was a 1941 graduate of E.L. Meyers High School, Wilkes-Barre.

He retired in 1971 from the U.S. Marine Corps after serving for 30 years. During World War II, he served in Panama and in the Pacific Theater where he took part in the invasion of Iwo Jima. He also served in the Korean War and did two tours of duty in Vietnam. He received the Combat Action Ribbon, the Good Conduct Medal with eight stars, the Veterans Service Medal with three stars, the Veterans Campaign Medal with the Device, the Combat Aircrew Insignia with three stars, two Strike/Flight Air Medals and the Expert Shooting Badge.

After retiring from the military, he worked for Friedman Express Trucking Co. He was an active member of Baptist Tabernacle Church and was on its board of trustees. He was also a member of the Fifth Marine Division Association, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 283 and the Young Men's Christian Association Men's Club. He was president of Seibi Home Orphanage in Japan. He was an avid bowler.

Surviving are his brothers, William, Front Royal, Va., and John, Hanover Township; nieces and nephews; and his extended family from the Western Pancake House.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday from the James M. Desiderio Funeral Home, 2 Academy Road, Hanover Township, with the Rev. Scott M. Stevenson officiating. Interment will be at Maple Hill Cemetery.
